Figuring out where to stay in Sumba matters more than on most Indonesian islands. Sumba is a large, slow-moving, and wildly diverse island, from surf beaches and traditional villages to vast, empty savannah landscapes that still feel untouched. Choosing the wrong base, however, can mean spending hours on the road each day, while the right one completely makes or breaks your experience.
In this guide, I’ll show you exactly where to stay in Sumba based on how you travel. Whether you want easy access to waterfalls and villages, quiet beachfront stays or surfing – this post breaks down the best areas and the hotels that make sense in each location.
Where to stay in Sumba at a glance
Best luxury resort in Sumba to splurge: NIHI Sumba
Best place to stay for beaches: Ketanu Bamboo Lodge
Best area in Sumba for surfing: Lelewatu Resort
Best base for sightseeing and culture: Maringi Eco Hotel
Most offbeat place to stay: Sumba Adventure Resort
Below, I break down each area in detail so you can choose the best base depending on how you travel and how much time you have.
How to Choose the Right Area in Sumba
Since Sumba is a large island and it takes a while to get around, you need to choose the right base for your stay. You can either stay only in West Sumba and explore from there, or split your time between West and East Sumba if you’re crossing the island overland.
If you stay in West Sumba, your hotels will likely provide you with meals on a full-board. There are no restaurants or cafes around. While in East Sumba, if you stay near Waingapu, you have more options to eat out. In both West and East, many hotels are just isolated by nature.
This map shows the main regions of Sumba, key towns, and hotel bases mentioned in this guide. Use it to understand distances before choosing where to stay.
Who Sumba is for
Sumba is for you if you value nature and culture over developed places. If you are happy to slow down, spend time on the road, long drives through vast landscapes, this island will click!
You come here for wide open spaces, quiet beaches, traditional villages, and stays that feel connected to the land. This is not a destination for rushing or hopping between hotels. It works best when you choose one strong base, stay a little longer, and give Sumba time to reveal itself.
How I Traveled Sumba and Where I Stayed
When I got to visit in 2020, I stayed in West Sumba, at Maringi Eco Hotel for about two weeks. This turned out to be the perfect location for day trips to nearby waterfalls, villages, markets and beaches. The hotel arranged all of my transfers with their own cars and driver. For East Sumba, I arranged a day trip and rented my own motorbike.
The hotel serves as a school for underprivileged students. Daily, you’ll be greeted, served and accommodated by those students, which makes it a unique experience. They love connecting with guests, practicing English and even inviting you to a football match. If you go in with a relaxed mindset, don’t expect perfection, you’ll have the best time!
West Sumba – The Best Base for Exploring the Island
Why Stay in West Sumba
West Sumba is the easiest place to start your trip and you should stay at least for 4-5 days to soak it all in. This is where Tambolaka Airport is located, which makes arrivals and departures simple. West Sumba is also the best base for visiting places like Weekuri Lagoon, Ratenggaro, Praijing Village, and several waterfalls. Roads are still rough, but compared to the rest of the island, distances here are manageable.
You’re still far from crowds, nightlife, or café culture. So meals are often taken at your accommodation or planned around your excursions.
The Best Hotels in West Sumba: From Budget to Luxury
Mario Hotel and Cafe
Mario Hotel and Cafe sits right by the beach, about a 15-minute walk from Mananga Aba Beach and less than 7 miles from Tambolaka Airport. Book Mario Hotel if you want the best beach access on a budget and don’t want to be locked into a resort meal plan.
Maringi Eco Hotel
Maringi Eco Hotel is ideal if your focus is on exploring West Sumba’s main sights. It’s not right on the beach, but it puts you closer to cultural sites and supports local education through the Sumba Hospitality Foundation. The hotel can arrange all your trips with knowledgeable guides, great cars and because of their connection to the community, will know the hidden spots!
Stay here if you want your travel dollars to go directly into local education. It is a unique chance to be hosted by the next generation of Sumbanese hospitality students. Support the foundation and book your stay at Maringi here.
Anna Villas by Sumba Beach
Anna Villas by Sumba Beach is one of the most Instagrammable places to stay! The villas are elegant and spacious, with ocean views, an on-site restaurant. Here they are serving a mix of Indonesian and international dishes from breakfast through dinner. If what you want is privacy, comfort, and a polished stay in a very quiet setting, Anna Villas delivers that beautifully!
Further west in Kodi, beaches and quiet
Kodi is more remote and less developed, but it has some of the most beautiful beaches in West Sumba. This area works best if you want beach time and don’t mind being farther from the main sights.
ARYA Sumba, Kodi Resort
ARYA Sumba is a good middle ground if you want beach access and a pool, without luxury pricing. It’s farther from Tambolaka Airport, but it works well if you plan to slow down, spend time by the water, rather than ticking off sights. The design is super pretty, newly built, and you get prime views of the sunset!
South-West Coast Sumba: Best for Beaches & Surfing
South West Sumba is not the part of the island you choose for cafés, shopping, or restaurant hopping. There are no beach clubs, no walkable towns, and very few (to none) standalone restaurants outside of hotels.
That is exactly why it works so well!
This area is about long, empty beaches like Bella and Mandorak, cliffside viewpoints, quiet villages, and drives where you barely pass another car.
You eat most meals at your hotel, spend time on the beach or by the pool, head out for a surf or a short excursion, then come back as the sun drops. Evenings are quiet and early in the best way.
Best Luxury Resorts in South-West Sumba
NIHI Sumba
NIHI Sumba is in a category of its own and the place if you want adventure and indulgence in equal measure. Surfing is a big draw, but even if you do not surf, there is plenty to experience. One of the most memorable moments is watching the resort’s horses being taken into the ocean.
There is a reason NIHI is often voted the best hotel in the world – it’s a place that stays with you long after you leave. Whether you’re there to surf the famous ‘Occy’s Left’ or to watch the horses run through the surf at sunset, it is the ultimate Sumba experience. Check villa availability and book your stay at NIHI Sumba here.
Lelewatu Resort Sumba
Lelewatu Resort is a great choice if you want luxury and easy access to the surf. The villas sit high on the cliffs, built in a traditional Sumbanese style, with wide ocean views. This part of South Sumba is known for its wild coastline and surf breaks.
Lelewatu works well if you want a beautiful base where days are split between beach time, and sunset views back at the resort. It feels like staying in a royal Sumbanese village, but with five-star comfort. See the latest rates and reserve your cliffside villa at Lelewatu.
Because Sumba is still developing, these boutique spots have very few rooms and book out months in advance. I’d recommend checking your dates early!
Alamayah Boutique Retreat
Alamayah Boutique Retreat is stands out if you want to be directly on the beautiful Watu Bella Beach. It’s a calm, beachfront stay with ocean views, a pool, and a relaxed, wellness-focused atmosphere. This place is perfect if you’re happy spending most of your time at the hotel and on nearby beaches. A good option for couples who want privacy, nature, and a base between trips.
Ketanu Bamboo Lodge
Ketanu Bamboo in my eyes stands out with its new, stunning design! The rooms are comfortable, many with balconies or terraces looking over the sea. It is a good choice if you want a design-forward hotel, prefer jumping in the pool, without going fully remote. For couples who want that modern, ‘Instagrammable’ bamboo architecture without the price tag, Ketanu is the winner. Secure your stay at Ketanu Bamboo Lodge here before it gets fully discovered!
Sumba Retreat Kerewe
If you want something more economical and right on the beach, Sumba Retreat Kerewe is worth a look. It has direct beachfront access to Bella Beach, a peaceful garden, and a very low-key atmosphere. Rooms are simple but comfortable, and the service is consistently praised.
East Sumba – Wild, Cultural & Closest to Waingapu
East Sumba is a nice alternative if you want easier logistics and a bit more everyday life for 2-3 nights. This side of the island is closer to Waingapu, the capital, which means you have access to local markets, small shops, and simple restaurants.
Why Stay in East Sumba
Hotels here usually don’t lock you into fixed meal times, which gives you more flexibility day to day. It works well if you’re doing fewer long excursions and prefer slower days with selected trips to like Walakiri Beach, Wairinding Hills, or Wai Marang Waterfall, instead of stacking sights.
Distances in East Sumba are still long, but having a nearby town makes the trip feel more manageable, especially if you’re crossing the island overland or flying out from Waingapu.
Best Hotels and Resorts to Stay in East Sumba
Morinda Villa and Resto
The beautiful Morinda Villa was my base in Waingapu for exploring East Sumba. The villas are affordable, sit slightly outside town, overlooking a green valley, with river-facing cabins and a calm, tucked-away feel. The on-site restaurant makes evenings easy, and the staff are incredibly helpful when it comes to arranging drivers and routes.
This is the most strategic base if you’re planning to spend your days exploring the Wairinding Hills or Walakiri Beach. Check rates and book your river-facing cabin at Morinda Villa here!
Casa Kandara
Casa Kandara is a practical and comfortable option right in the town of Waingapu. It’s ideal for one or two nights, especially if you’re arriving late, flying out early, or need a base with restaurants nearby. The pool and restaurant make it a comfortable stop without feeling like a resort.
Tanoma Sumba
Tanoma Sumba is a beautiful beachfront stay with a calm, remote feel. The private beach and infinity pool make it ideal if you want quiet mornings, ocean views, and a slower pace. This works best as a couple-night stay while exploring East Sumba’s landscapes. It’s rare to find this level of beachfront quiet so close to Waingapu. Secure your beachfront stay at Tanoma Sumba here for a slow-paced end to your trip.
Villa Kandora
Villa Kandora is for you if you want a quiet beachfront stay further away from town. It has direct beach access, an infinity pool facing the ocean, and plenty of space to slow down. There’s also an on-site restaurant serving Indonesian and international dishes. This works best if you plan an excursion during the day, then want to come back to a peaceful place.
Far East Sumba – For Travelers Who Want to Be Completely Off the Grid
Far East Sumba is for travelers who want to disconnect completely. This part of the island is remote, slow and as offbeat as it gets. You stay put, eat where you sleep, and let the days unfold around the ocean and enjoy nature. It works best at the end of a trip if you have 2-3 days to spare, once you have already explored West or East Sumba.
Sumba Adventure Resort
Sumba Adventure Resort is for you if you want to be far away from everything, because over that side, that’s the point. The resort blends right into nature, with a very down-to-earth feel! Its right on the beach, with simple, comfortable rooms and open terraces. Here you can fill your days with surfing, diving and quiet mornings with nothing planned.
It’s not luxury, but it offers something harder to find: space, silence, and a feeling of being at the edge of the island.
If you’re ready to trade Wi-Fi and luxury for empty line-ups and total silence, this is your spot. It’s Sumba in its rawest form. Check availability for Sumba Adventure Resort here
Choosing where to stay in Sumba really influences how your entire trip is going to be. Once your base is set, everything else becomes easier: how long you drive each day, which places make sense to visit, and how slow or adventurous your days feel.
If you want help planning what to actually see and do from each area, I’ve put together a detailed Sumba travel guide covering villages, beaches, waterfalls, and realistic day routes across the island.
