Things You Need to Know For Your Barbados Itinerary
Best Time to Visit Barbados:
The best time to visit Barbados is generally during the dry season from December to April. During these months, you can enjoy sunny weather and lower chances of rain. If you’re interested in experiencing the lively Crop Over festival, plan your trip between June and August.
However, Barbados is a year-round destination! Even during the wetter months from May to November, you can still have a great time – potentially even fewer crowds and lower rates.
What’s Barbados Famous For
Barbados is renowned as the birthplace of global music icon Rihanna, whose success has brought significant attention to the island. People love her and there is even a Rihanna Drive Monument in Bridgetown that you can visit.
In addition to its music legacy, Barbados is celebrated for its rum production, with historic distilleries such as Mount Gay Rum Distillery showcasing the island’s rich tradition of rum-making.
How to Get to Barbados
To reach Barbados, travelers typically fly into the well-connected Grantley Adams International Airport. This one makes a great hub for international flights. Right outside the terminal, you can catch the local bus if you’re adventurous. Alternatively, you can book a private taxi ahead of time to take you to your hotel – especially if you stay far from the airport!

How to Get Around Barbados
Once on the island, getting around is convenient. Barbados boasts a reliable public transportation network that gets you around the island for around 1 US. The best way to catch one is to wait by the designated bus stops and ask around.
Typically they stop in Bridgetown, including buses and privately-operated vans, offering an affordable means to travel between different areas. Additionally, taxis are readily available. For a more curated experience, guided tours and private drivers are also popular options for discovering the diverse attractions of Barbados.
If you like to be independent and keen to see the whole island, I recommend renting a car for your stay. This is the best solution if you want to be on your own timeline, experience some more offbeat spots, and have full freedom.
Wifi & How to Stay Connected
As far as I saw, there was no shop selling SIM cards at the airport and if you’re short on time on the island, consider getting an eSIM card. Having an eSIM in Barbados means no need to hassle with swapping physical SIM cards and you’re connected right upon landing!
I haven’t been to many restaurants but the cafes I’ve tried did have Wifi for free.

Day 1 Bridgetown
Begin your Barbados itinerary in Bridgetown. As the capital of Barbados and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bridgetown conveys a unique blend of historical significance, cultural richness, and vibrant character.
The colorful houses are just one of the many charms of the city. While strolling through town, you’ll pass many street food vendors, cute fruit shops and cafes to stop by. The city center is small enough and pleasant to stroll through alone. However, if you want to get a deep insight into the culture and history by a true Barbadian, I’d recommend joining this organized walking tour.
Bridgetown is a truly special destination that shows off the most gorgeous buildings, and streetside markets and gives a great inside into the Barbados way of life.
Parliament Buildings
Start your Bridgetown city tour at the Parliament Building near the river. These historic buildings are an iconic landmark with impressive colonial architecture and historical significance.
Careenage
Take a leisurely stroll along the tranquil waters of the Careenage. On a sunny day, this picturesque marina is lined with charming buildings, pretty boats and bustles with activity.
Cheapside Market
To the north of the city, you’ll find the famous Cheapside Market. Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of this bustling market, where you can find local produce, crafts, and an array of unique items. On the opposite side is also a local cafe with great cake!
Carlisle Bay
In the afternoon, go visit the stunning Carlisle Bay a true natural wonder. The bay features pristine, crystal-clear waters and inviting soft, white sand beaches. This bay is truly one of the most beautiful beaches and one of the top hidden gems on the Barbados itinerary.
Coming from Bridgetown, you’ll find a few stylish beach clubs and even a cool food court with cuisines from all around the world. Besides the culinary side, you’ll also have the opportunity to engage in various activities such as snorkel and paddleboarding. If you’ve never been on a glass-bottom boat, with this Turtle and Shipwreck Snorkel Adventure you get to cruise on one through the area and snorkel in the turquoise water around the nearby shipwreck.
The Carlisle Marine Park is a wonderful place to observe the vibrant marine life that inhabits the area. If you are also a fan of boat trips, an open bar, and spending the day spotting turtles and exploring the coral reef, you should book one of the Catamaran Snorkel Cruises to have a day out on the sea!
Bridgetown Best Places to Eat
Right at the end of Carlisle Bay you’ll find a pier and one of the city’s most iconic places to eat: Cuzz Fish Burgers. The simple yet delicious burgers are sure to attract a queue no matter the time of day. One of these bad boys will cost you 15 US or 30 BBD – a cheap meal for islands standard!
Oistins Fish Fry
End your first day in Oistins, where you can immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of Oistins Fish Fry. Especially on a Friday, it’s THE place to be on the island. On a regular weekday, you can still savor fresh Bajan cuisine, partake in live music, and witness the vibrant culture of the island.
Day 2 Barbados Island Tour
If you’re visiting Barbados you just have to do an island tour as part of any itinerary. Despite being an island, Barbados is still relatively big and best to explore by car. You could reach many places by public bus but if you’re short on time, I recommend you to rent a car.
Sunrise Mission at Pebbles Beach
Top Barbados itinerary tip: Every morning, the horses from the local staples are being taken to Pebbles Beach for a bath. It’s a unique and traditional practice that adds to the cultural charm and something you shouldn’t miss!
Coco Hill Forest
Exploring nature at Coco Hill Forest is one of the best eco-activities you can do in Barbados! It’s the last piece of virgin rainforest on the island and therefore super important for the local ecosystem.
Every visit contributes to helping plant trees but it indirectly helps rebuild the soil. Consequently, every new tree will help improve the earth the Bajans live on. To explore this serene and enchanting location and other hidden gems, consider renting a car.
Head to Coco Hill Forest in the morning to really enjoy half a day of hiking the area. This serene and enchanting location provides the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in Barbados’ natural beauty. Those views and hikes make it one of the real must-see places of any Barbados itinerary and one that many don’t even know exist!
I’d recommend you join a guided tour to learn about the diverse flora and fauna that call the forest home. One of the highlights of the hike is The Cathedral, an area of King Palm trees that are just jaw-dropping. Before you leave, stop at the treetop walkway to enjoy panoramic views of the island’s tropical landscapes.
Dover Beach
In the afternoon, head back towards Christ Church parish and visit Dover Beach. This pristine white sandy beach also features some of the best clear turquoise waters.
Besides the picturesque shoreline and coastal views, you’ll also find the Southern Palms Beach Club hotel here- just a dream in pink. A place I’d totally stay in next time!
Right next to it, you’ll find St. Lawrence Gap. This area is known for its lively nightlife, offering an array of bars, restaurants, and entertainment venues. Nevertheless, the area’s central location to various amenities, shops, and accommodations makes it a convenient and well-equipped place to stay.
Barbados Rum Tour
If you’re not so much into beaches, you should go on one of the famous distillery tours. Mount Gay Rum Distillery is the oldest existing brand of rum in the world, with a history dating back to 1703. When visiting the Mount Gay Rum Distillery, take this traveler ‘s-approved half-day rum tasting and discovery tour to learn about the history of rum production in Barbados and witness the distillation process. The tour typically includes a tasting session where visitors can sample various rum products.
Harrison’s Cave
If you love a bit of a thrill, Harrison’s Cave might be a good choice! The renowned limestone cave system is famous in Barbados for its stunning natural beauty and unique geological formations. The cave features awe-inspiring stalactites, stalagmites, streams, and crystal-clear pools, all of which contribute to its allure.
One of the main highlights of the cave is the massive chambers adorned with remarkable speleothems, including flowstones and columns, creating a captivating underground landscape. Visit the cave on your own or join a hassle-free 3-hour tour that explores the winding tunnels onboard an electric train!
The Richard Haynes Boardwalk
Just before sunset, I recommend you head to the charming Richard Haynes Boardwalk near Rockley Beach. The artwork along the Richard Haynes Boardwalk includes some eye-catching and diverse pieces. From sculptures to murals, the artistic expressions from both locals and international artists contribute to making this another hidden gem on this Barbados itinerary.
It’s just a wonderful place to stroll along the shore, watch people go for a run and see the sunset. If you’re lucky, you might find the man who is famous for selling elaborate cocktails on Rockley Beach – ideal to end the day!
Because of its location, it is also a fantastic place to observe nesting Hawksbill turtles!
Day 3 Sam Lord’s Castle
While Barbados is known for its popular tourist spots, the real magic lies in its hidden off-the-beaten-path spots. These are the places that truly showcase the island’s unique charm and give you a glimpse into its rich culture and history.
Check into the newly built Wyndham Sam Lord’s Castle and spend the morning by the stunning swimming pool. The property was named after Samuel Hall Lord, a notorious Barbadian pirate who allegedly amassed his wealth by plundering ships and accumulating treasures during the early 19th century.
Legend has it that Lord used false lighthouses to lure ships onto the reef, where they would run aground, allowing him and his crew to seize the cargo.
Today, the legend of Sam Lord lives on, and the restored Wyndham Sam Lord Castle pays homage to the pirate’s legacy while offering a luxurious and unforgettable experience for visitors
Crane Beach
In the afternoon, embark on a beach-hopping excursion. Begin at the iconic Crane Beach, famous for its pink-tinged sand and dramatic cliffs. This one is one of the hidden gems when in Barbados on a sunny day. If you’re craving a drink, there’s a lovely man at the entrance of the beach, ready to make you a coconut cocktail!
After Crane Beach, head to nearby Bottom Bay, known for its breathtaking views, clear blue waters, and coconut palms. It’s an excellent spot for a leisurely stroll along the shore and to take in the natural beauty of the area.
Next, make your way to Foul Bay. This one is a more secluded beach with a rugged coastline and rolling waves – a favorite of the locals!
St. Nicholas Abbey Plantation
As you’re already in the area, you should visit St. Nicholas Abbey Plantation, a renowned historical plantation in Barbados. It’s a bit tricky to get there by public transport and I sadly ran out of time to visit. The 17th century Plantation House is now an award-winning distillery and this St. Nicholas Abbey in Barbados Tour allows you to sample some rum and also tours the grounds. The personalized tour provides insight into the island’s history of sugar production and the workings of a traditional plantation.
Here you can explore the great house, gardens, and rum distillery located on the property. St. Nicholas Abbey is known for its picturesque setting and historical significance and is truly a must on any Barbados itinerary. Due to this history, it makes a popular destination for everyone seeking a glimpse into Barbados’ colonial past.
Barbados, Best Hotels to Stay:

Day 4 Walkers Reserve
For your last day, you could engage in a few eco-activities like visiting the Walkers Reserve in Barbados. The Walkers Institute for Regenerative Research and Design (WIRRED) focuses on the transformation of degraded lands through regenerative research, education, and design. Furthermore, it’s an opportunity to engage in activities that support the environment and local communities while learning about regenerative efforts. Booking a rental car ensures you have the flexibility to explore this incredible reserve and more of the island’s lesser-known treasures at your own pace.
At the Walkers Reserve, you can participate nature walks and guided tours to explore regenerative landscapes. At the same time, it’s a wonderful opportunity to volunteer and contribute to ongoing ecological restoration efforts and habitat restoration.

Another great activity is participating in the Slow Soup Drive at Slow Food Barbados. This initiative was born in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and aims to provide nourishing bowls of soup to vulnerable members of the community,
Here are some ways you can engage with the Slow Soup Drive as one of your Barbados itinerary hot spots and eco-activities:
