Things to Know Before Visiting Dahab
How to Get to Dahab from Europe
To travel from Europe to Dahab, you have a few options:
By Air: The best way to reach Egypt, specifically Dahab, from Europe is by flying. There are several international airports in Egypt, with Cairo International Airport being the largest and most well-connected.
Check for flights early and get the best deals for your Egypt adventure!
From Europe, you can find direct flights to Cairo or Sharm El Sheikh, which is the nearest airport to Dahab. From Sharm El Sheikh, you can take a taxi or arrange for a private transfer to Dahab, which is approximately a 1-hour drive.
By Bus: If you find a good flight to Caira, you can also take one of the regular bus services operating between Cairo and Dahab. Buses usually depart from Cairo’s Turgoman Bus Station and take around 10 hours to reach Dahab. It’s a budget-friendly option, but the journey can be quite long so I’d do it as a night bus journey! There are also buses from Sharm el Sheikh to Dahab which leave twice a day and take about 2 hours.
By Car: If you’re very adventurous and like to explore a country on your own, you can also rent a car and drive from Cairo/Sharm el Sheikh to Dahab. Make sure to have a valid international driving license and follow all traffic regulations.
Currency
The official currency in Egypt is the Egyptian Pound (EGP). While cards become more common in Egypt, it’s important to note that cash is still widely used, especially in smaller establishments.
Major cities and tourist areas generally have a higher acceptance of cards. I’d advise having some cash in local currency for small expenses, as not all establishments accept credit cards. ATMs are widely available in Egypt, and you can use your card to withdraw cash in Egyptian pounds. As for all my trips, I’d suggest signing up for a prepaid Wise card to withdraw money abroad and save of additional costs. It’s advisable to use ATMs located in secure areas such as banks or well-known establishments.
Weather Dahab
The best time to visit Dahab is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. These months offer pleasant temperatures, ranging from 24°C to 29°C (75°F to 84°F), making it ideal for outdoor activities like snorkeling.
The weather is generally sunny, and the sea is calm during this time, allowing for excellent visibility underwater. It’s worth noting that Dahab can be visited year-round, but summer months can be very hot, while winters are mild but can be a bit cooler for water activities.
Internet & SIM CARD
In Dahab, the major mobile network providers are Vodafone, Orange, and Etisalat. These providers offer various prepaid SIM card options for visitors. You can easily purchase a prepaid SIM card straight at the airport or in town from official stores. Just make sure to bring your passport as it is required for SIM card registration!
If you want to plan ahead, I suggest looking into getting an eSIM Card to have a connection right away!
Is Dahab Safe
Dahab is generally considered a safe destination for travelers. The town has a low crime rate, and tourists are welcomed warmly by the local community. However, it is always recommended to take common-sense precautions while traveling. Just be aware of your surroundings, keep your belongings secure, and follow any local guidelines or advisories.
Can You Drink Alcohol in Dahab
Yes, you can drink alcohol in Dahab. It’s important to note that Dahab has a more relaxed and laid-back atmosphere compared to other areas in Egypt. Alcohol is generally available in some restaurants, hotels, and bars in Dahab. However, it may not be as widely accessible or as prominently advertised as in other tourist destinations.
Dahab vs Sharm el Sheikh
Dahab and Sharm el Sheikh are both popular tourist destinations in Egypt, but they offer different experiences.
The town is known for its laid-back and bohemian vibe. It has a more relaxed atmosphere and is favored by travelers seeking a tranquil beach getaway. The town itself is smaller and has a more authentic feel, with beachfront cafes, Bedouin-inspired shops, and a friendly community.
On the other hand, Sharm el Sheikh is a larger and more developed resort city. It offers a wide range of luxury resorts, hotels, restaurants, and entertainment options. Sharm el Sheikh is known for its vibrant nightlife, bustling markets, and extensive tourist infrastructure.
When choosing between Dahab and Sharm el Sheikh, it depends on the type of experience you’re seeking. If you prefer a more laid-back and authentic atmosphere with a focus on tranquility, Dahab is a great choice. If you’re looking for a larger resort city with vibrant nightlife and a wide range of amenities, Sharm el Sheikh may be more suitable.
