Should you stay inside or outside the Itchan Kala?
This is the real decision for hotels in Khiva, Uzbekistan and it’s worth thinking about before you book. The Itchan Kala forms the historic walled heart of Khiva, a city with more than 2,500 years of history. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the most atmospheric place to sleep in all of Central Asia!
Hotels inside the walls are converted caravanserais and old merchant houses with rooftop terraces that look directly onto the minarets. Outside the walls, you get more modern comfort, easier parking, and slightly lower prices.
My honest take: if you’re spending one or two nights in Khiva, stay inside the walls. The experience of walking out of your hotel at dawn into a city that looks like it hasn’t changed in five centuries is worth every trade-off. If you need modern amenities and a proper gym or pool, stay outside and walk in each day.

How to Get to Khiva
Most travelers arrive in Khiva by overnight train from Bukhara or Samarkand, which takes between 7 and 9 hours and is one of the great Central Asian rail journeys. The train drops you at Urgench station, about 35 kilometers from Khiva, from where you take a shared taxi or private transfer into the city. The drive takes around 30 to 40 minutes.
Flying into Urgench airport is the faster option if you’re coming from Tashkent, with daily domestic flights taking about an hour and a half.

I knew I had to get this one since one ticket covers almost every monument inside the walls, including the Islam Khodja Minaret, the Kuhna Ark palace, the Tash Khauli harem complex, and several smaller museums. You can buy it at the main gate on arrival and take your time.

Khiva Desert Castles
One excursion I urge you to do is to visit the nearby desert castles. The ancient Khorezm fortresses scattered across the desert outside Khiva and are genuinely one of the most underrated sights in Central Asia. You can visit the ancient fortresses of Khorezm, some dating back over 2,000 years, easily on a half-day tour from the city.
Most hotels can arrange this or you can hire a driver independently. I did this and it was one of the highlights of my entire Uzbekistan trip.

Is Khiva worth visiting in Uzbekistan?
Yes, and it’s the most underrated of the three main cities. Samarkand gets the reputation, Bukhara gets the travelers, but Khiva is the most intact and visually dramatic.
How many nights do you need in Khiva?
Two to three nights is enough to see everything comfortably. Khiva is very small but that’s part of the charm. One full day for the Itchan Kala at your own pace, one day for the desert castles, and an evening to wander the old city when the day visitors have gone. Any longer and you’re there to genuinely unwind, which is also a valid reason to stay.
On one of those evenings, make sure to visit Terrassa Cafe & Restaurant for the most magical rooftop setting, sunset views and food!
Is it safe to travel to Khiva?
Uzbekistan is one of the safest countries in Central Asia and Khiva is no exception. The Itchan Kala becomes extremely quiet after dark, so solo travelers may prefer sticking to the better-lit main lanes later in the evening.
What is the best time to visit Khiva?
April to June and September to November are the sweet spots. Summer is brutal, regularly above 40 degrees inside a desert city.
I was there during the watermelon festival in August, which is one of those accidental travel highlights that ends up being a favorite memory of the whole trip.
